The first two installments, "The Road to War" and "The Eye of the Storm" were initially broadcast as a feature-length pilot episode on November 7, 2017, under the name "Black Sunday." Based on a true story, this dramatic miniseries relives the heroic fight for survival during the Iraq War, when the 1st Cavalry Division from Fort Hood was ferociously ambushed in Sadr City, Baghdad. The Road Home Program is dedicated to the mental health and wellness of veterans, service members, members of the National Guard, reservists and families at no cost and regardless of discharge status. Much of the production has been shot at the US Army base at Fort Hood in Texas, and so benefits from the availability of authentic US Army vehicles and equipment, and even advice from some of the 1st Cavalry soldiers who fought in the actual battle. Fionas first novel, Paycheque, was published in 2011 and became a bestseller. She then moved to Melbourne and on to Sydney a few years later.

The series is an account of a 48-hour battle in Sadr City (an area of Baghdad known as Saddam City before the invasion), that began on Apwhen militiamen of the Mahdi Army ambushed elements of the newly-arrived 1st Cavalry Division. Fiona McCallum was raised on a cereal and wool farm near Cleve on South Australias Eyre Peninsula and remained in the area until her mid-twenties, during which time she married and separated. LIRR service runs 24/7, with different schedules depending on destination and time of day. The Long Road Home is a 2017 American television miniseries adaptation of the 2007 book The Long Road Home: A Story of War and Family by journalist Martha Raddatz.
